Irish National Champion: Ava Crean – 2:34:12 (PB) – Leaderboard and Runner Tracking
Ava Crean: A Story of Talent, Discipline, and Discovery
Originally from Raheen, Limerick, Ava Crean doesn’t come from a traditional athletic background. Growing up, she practiced climbing, karate, and camogie, and later focused on basketball, eventually joining Ireland’s U-17 national academy. She gave up sports for four years and started running recreationally during the pandemic, “to keep fit.”
Her talent emerged quickly: in her debut at the 2025 Manchester Marathon, where she had declared a goal of 3 hours 30 minutes, she surprised everyone by crossing the finish line in 2:49. A month later, she won the Great Limerick Run in 2:43:38. In Dublin, her second marathon experience, Crean put on a real display. She ran alongside the experienced Ann Marie McGlynn, 26 years her senior, completing the 10km in 36:51 and the half-marathon in 1:17:13, just over five minutes behind the Ethiopian leader. From the 30km mark, she picked up the pace, finally took off, and crossed the finish line, raising her arms in excitement.
With her time of 2:34:12, Crean is second in the Irish rankings for 2025, behind only Fionnuala McCormack (2:30:16), and 13th in the national all-time list. She achieved this while combining her university studies at University Academy 92 (Manchester) with self-directed training, with no prior formal athletic background. Her story has captivated the Irish public, who now consider her the new hope for the national women’s marathon.
