On Sunday, November 2, 2025, the TCS New York Marathon—the final stop on the Abbott World Marathon Majors calendar—will bring together three true icons of global athletics: Eliud Kipchoge, Kenenisa Bekele and Sifan Hassan.
The clash between the African legends and Hassan’s highly anticipated return to New York’s streets promises a historic edition.
Historic Duel Between Kipchoge and Bekele
The rivalry between Eliud Kipchoge (Kenya) and Kenenisa Bekele (Ethiopia) will see its sixth chapter over the marathon distance in New York. Both are now over 40, yet they remain the standard-bearers of a generation that redefined distance running.
Their previous head-to-head meetings underscore the magnitude of this showdown:
| Year | Race | Winner | Notable Result |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2014 | Chicago | Kipchoge | Bekele – 4th (2:05:51) |
| 2016 | London | Kipchoge | Bekele – 3rd (2:06:36) |
| 2017 | Berlin | Kipchoge | Bekele – DNF (Did Not Finish) |
| 2018 | London | Kipchoge | Bekele – 6th (2:08:53) |
| 2024 | Paris Olympics | Bekele | Kipchoge – DNF |
Both arrive in New York with questions to answer. Kipchoge is coming off a modest performance in Sydney (2:08, 9th place). Bekele, 43, did not finish in Valencia last year. Even so, their presence lends the race unique symbolic weight—it could be their final face-off at a Marathon Major.
The withdrawal of Evans Chebet, confirmed on October 24, opened the door for Bekele’s return and further amplified worldwide interest in this edition.
Men’s Elite Favorites
Alongside the legends, the men’s elite field blends proven champions with rising talent.
Abdi Nageeye (Netherlands), the defending champion and the first Dutchman ever to win a Major (PB 2:04:20).
Benson Kipruto (Kenya), runner-up in Tokyo 2024 with a 2:02:16 best.
Alexander Mutiso (Kenya), winner of the 2025 London Marathon in 2:03:11.
Albert Korir (Kenya), 2021 New York champion.
Abel Kipchumba (Kenya), a dangerous debutant with a 57:59 half-marathon PB.
Deresa Galeta (Ethiopia) and Alphonce Simbu (Tanzania), both reinstated to the field on October 27 after initially being left out.
Matthias Kyburz (Switzerland), a running.COACH ambassador with a 2:06:48 PB, aiming for a top-10 finish.
Matthias Kyburz Targets the Top 10
Swiss runner Matthias Kyburz, ambassador for the training app running.COACH, will also be on the start line of the 2025 New York City Marathon. After several standout performances in recent months—across the Seville Marathon, the Olympic marathon, and the half marathon—he arrives with the goal of breaking into the top 10 on one of the world’s most demanding courses.
Kyburz acknowledges that New York is a different race: there are no pacers, the course features constant undulation, and the final stretch in Central Park demands patience and strategy.
“A top-10 finish in New York seems ambitious, but realistic,” he said before traveling to the United States.

Hassan Leads an All-Star Women’s Field in New York
In the women’s race, Sifan Hassan (Netherlands) headlines a stellar lineup. Winner of the 2025 Sydney Marathon with a course record of 2:18:22 and third in London, she will run her third marathon of the year in pursuit of another Major victory.
Hassan will be joined by an exceptional women’s elite.
Sharon Lokedi (Kenya), 2022 New York champion and 2025 Boston winner.
Sheila Chepkirui (Kenya), the defending New York champion.
Hellen Obiri (Kenya), runner-up in 2024 and champion in 2023.
Gotytom Gebreslase (Ethiopia), the 2022 world champion.
Fabienne Schlumpf (Switzerland), Swiss record holder, returning in the updated field.
Eilish McColgan (Great Britain) and Karoline Bjerkeli Grøvdal (Norway), high-profile European debutants.
The most anticipated showdown could unfold in the final meters between Hassan and Obiri—two of the world’s finest closers—through the demanding Central Park finish.
Can Hassan Break the New York Women’s Record?
The women’s course record of 2:22:31, set by Margaret Okayo in 2003, remains the longest-standing Major marathon record. Having clocked 2:13:44 in London, Sifan Hassan arrives as favorite to potentially break this historic barrier.
