The Principality Building Society Cardiff Half Marathon has become one of the UK’s biggest and most exciting races. It is now one of the largest half marathons in Europe and the largest mass participation and charity fundraising event in Wales.

The next edition of the Cardiff Half Marathon will take place on Sunday, October 6th, 2024. The race is also part of the Superhalfs Series, a global series of the world’s most prestigious half marathons that includes races in Lisbon, Prague, Berlin, Copenhagen, Cardiff, and Valencia.

The event has grown significantly since Barnardo’s founded it in 2003, when 1,500 runners took part. It now attracts over 27,500 registered runners and world-class athletes in a trio of elite men’s, women’s, and wheelchair races.

The Cardiff Half Marathon also hosts the annual Welsh Half Marathon Championships and has hosted the World (2016) and Commonwealth (2018) Half Marathon Championships. The World Athletics Association has awarded it elite road race status.

More route details

The race starts in front of Cardiff Castle, and runners head towards Penarth past the Principality and Cardiff City stadiums. After passing through the glorious Penarth Marina, runners cross the Embankment and head into Cardiff Bay. Runners pass through the heart of the bay and take in the Norwegian Church and the Wales Millennium Centre.

The course then heads north of the city, and runners will complete a loop around the beautiful lake at Roath Park before reaching the finishing grandstand in the city center at the Civic Centre.

The wheelchair race will start at 9:50. The Elite, White, Green, and Red races will start at 10:00, and the Yellow and Blue races at 10:10. Check out the interactive map above to see the route in more detail.
