The Barcelona Marathon 2025 has set a new milestone by registering 27,000 runners, surpassing the previous record of 20,385 participants in 2016. Moreover, this 46th edition of the event achieved another significant record: 60% of the runners were international, representing 109 nationalities.

In this edition, new course records were also achieved. The winner, Ethiopian runner Deriba, stopped the clock at 2:04:13, improving by 48 seconds on the time recorded last year by Swiss athlete of Eritrean origin, Tadesse Abraham.

On the women’s side, Kenyan runner Chelimo was the first woman to cross the finish line, setting a new race record by lowering the previous mark by 7 seconds. With a time of 2:19:32, she also improved her personal best by more than two minutes.

An Optimized Course for Speed

The 2025 edition featured a course optimized to improve personal bests, with more favorable elevation and a route that led runners through some of the city’s most iconic landmarks, such as the Sagrada Familia, Parc de la Ciutadella, and Passeig de Gràcia, starting at the latter and finishing at the Arc de Triomf.

Men’s Results

Ethiopian Mekuant Ayenew (2h 04m 46s) and Kenyan Samwel Mailu (2h 05m 08s) were considered favorites in the men’s category. However, a negative note was the provisional suspension of Kenyan Kibiwott Kandie by the Athletics Integrity Unit (AIU) due to evading a doping test.
