On Sunday, February 23, the 40th edition of the Seville Marathon 2025 was held, gathering 14,000 runners in an event that has gained great prestige in recent years thanks to its fast, flat, sea-level course. This race has established itself as a must-attend event for elite athletes and enthusiasts looking to set their personal bests.
Among the elite runners, Ethiopian Selemon Barega, the Olympic champion of the 10,000 meters in Tokyo 2020, stood out as he faced his marathon debut. Barega recorded an unofficial time of 2:05:15 and won the race solo, although he did not manage to beat the course record.
Ethiopian Adisu Tesfahun Tafere took second place with 2:06:27, while Moroccan Mohamed Reda El Aaraby finished third with 2:06:45, both achieving their personal best times.
Fourth place went to Swiss Matthias Kyburtz with 2:06:48, who, as we recall, trained for the Paris Olympics using our running.COACH app.

Polish runner Adam Nowicki achieved the second-best time in his country’s history with a time of 2:08:41.
At the half marathon mark, along with three other runners guided by two pacers, he clocked 1:01:45, and by the 30th kilometer, he had already established himself as a solo leader. In the final kilometers, a clear reduction in his pace was noticeable, showing signs of fatigue in the last kilometer.
In the women’s category, the winner was Ethiopian Anchinalu Dessie Genaneh with 2:22:17. French runner Manon Trapp took second with 2:23:38, setting a record for her country, and Kenyan Cyntia Chepchirchir Kosgei finished third with 2:23:43.
Spanish athletes
• Kaoutar Boulaid (2:24:05) – 4th
• Meritxell Soler (2:26:05) – 6th
• Ikram Rharsalla (2:28:37) – 11th
The Seville Marathon features historic course records: the men’s record was set in 2024 by Ethiopian Deresa Geleta with a time of 2:03:27, and the women’s record has been held by her compatriot Alemu Megertu since 2022, with a mark of 2:18:52. Environmental conditions did not make the task easier either, as humidity levels reached up to 90%.
The Strength of Latin Participation
The event also highlighted the remarkable presence of Latin athletes. Among them, Ecuadorian record-holder Segundo Jami completed the race in 2:09:05; Juan Pacheco, recognized as Mexico’s fastest marathoner in the last decade, finished in 2:09:45; and Chilean Matías Silva, who finished in fourth place at the Santiago 2023 Pan American Games. In the women’s category, Ecuadorian Olympians Rosa Chacha, Mary Granja, and Paola Bonilla—three of the country’s top marathoners—delivered an outstanding performance.
The 40th edition of the Seville Marathon 2025 reaffirms its position as one of the fastest and most challenging events in Europe, combining an exceptional course, the participation of elite athletes, and prominent international representation. Despite facing adverse weather conditions, with humidity reaching up to 90%, the event proved to be a true challenge that tested the endurance and determination of the runners, laying the foundation for future records and memorable performances in the world of running.
