This Sunday, November 3, 2024, thousands of runners from around the world descended on New York City to participate in one of the most iconic marathons on the world calendar. With a route that traverses all five city boroughs, the New York City Marathon continues to be an event full of excitement, effort, and personal achievement, attracting elite runners and amateurs looking to push their limits.

The most iconic marathon major attracted more than 50,000 runners. In the men’s category, Abdi Nageeye, a 35-year-old Dutchman, won the race at 2:07:39, beating a group of high-level runners and performing excellently in his debut in New York.

En la categoría femenina, triunfó la keniana Sheila Chepkirui con 2:24:35 también debutando en la gran manzana.

We recall that the current road records are:
2:04:58 open division men’s record (Tamirat Tola, 2023).
2:22:31 Women’s open division record (Margaret Okayo, 2003). Learn more about Margaret Okayo’s unbeatable record.

Men’s results

The race was run in a compact group of 8 to 10 riders. Around kilometer 25, the American Frank Lara tried to take the lead but was caught again by the peloton in less than a minute. From kilometer 26, the champion Tola took the lead, however, at kilometer 35 he began to fall behind.

From then on, the leaders were Kenyans Evans Chebet, Geoffrey Kamworor, and Abdi Nageeye from the Netherlands of Somali origin.

Finally, in a close duel between Evans Chebet and Abdi Nageeye, the second one won with 2:07:39.

Before the race, Tola acknowledged that it had not been easy to win in New York last year. However, he made it clear that he had gone to win. “I know all the athletes who come here are confident. I’m racing to win too, so I know I’m up to the task,” he said.

Tola was coming off winning this summer’s Paris Olympic marathon in an Olympic record time of 2:06:26, just two weeks after being named to the Ethiopian team as a replacement for injured teammate Sisay Lemma.

However, Abdi Nageeye pulled off a surprise to become the first athlete from the Netherlands to win a title in the men’s open division. At the same time, Sheila Chepkirui topped the Kenyan podium in the women’s open division to claim her first Abbott World Marathon Majors title.

“I’m very happy with the race, because I didn’t perform well at the Olympics, and it was one of my biggest disappointments. So I went back to training, and I said to myself, you’ll never get it back… You can only do one thing: in less than two months you can do something big in the biggest marathon in the world, so focus on that.”

Kenya rounded out the podium with a pair of former champions, Evans Chebet, 2022 champion, and Albert Korir, 2021 champion, in second and third, in 2:07:45 and 2:08:00. Conner Mantz, the top American at the Paris 2024 Olympic Marathon, was the top American today, finishing sixth in 2:09:00.

Female Winners

As usual in this year’s marathons, a compact group of 19 runners was maintained until kilometer 28, when it began to reduce. At kilometer 34, there were already five runners in the lead, and from kilometer 38, there were only three left.

The last kilometers were between the champion Hellen Obiri, Kenyan Sheila Chepkirui, and Vivian Cheruiyot.

Finally, Sheila Chepkirui took the victory after a hard-fought duel in the last kilometer with 2:24:35, who was making her debut in New York, with the favorite Obiri in second place with 2:24:49 and Vivian Cheruiyot in third place with 2:25:21.

In her TCS New York City Marathon debut, Kenya’s Sheila Chepkirui led Kenya’s sweep with a time of 2:24:35. This is the first time since 1978 that a single country has won gold, silver, and bronze in the women’s open division.

“Winning today means a lot to me. It means that my training went well, and I am very happy for the win,” Chepkirui said.

TCS New York Marathon 2023 champion and Paris Marathon 2024 Olympic bronze medalist Hellen Obiri was second in 2:24:49, followed by compatriot Vivian Cheruiyot in 2:25:21. Sara Vaughn, a last-minute addition, was the top American in sixth, her best finish in an Abbott World Marathon Majors event.

The participation of Latin Americans

Runners from Latin America were also present and left their mark in New York. We highlight the participation of runners from the Dominican Republic, Ecuador, Colombia, Puerto Rico, Mexico, Argentina, and Venezuela who achieved outstanding times and proudly represented their countries, adding achievements in one of the most demanding marathons in the world.

Colombian singer and actor Sebastian Yatra ran to support the organization Keep a Child Alive.

Moments and emotions of the runners

The New York Marathon is not only a competition but an unforgettable experience. Thousands of spectators cheered the runners along the course in a festive and motivating atmosphere. Many athletes beat their personal bests, and others have fulfilled their dream of crossing the finish line in Central Park, reminding us of the essence of this sport: perseverance and passion.

The 2024 edition successfully closes another race in the Big Apple, standing out once again as a reference event for runners worldwide. We recall that the New York Marathon has been held since 1970. The race is organized by the non-profit organization New York Road Runners. Runners can access the marathon in various ways, such as qualifying time, a lottery, or charitable contributions.

For the first time, the organization added a “Team for Climate” in 2024, allowing runners to donate $3,000 in carbon credits to enter the race.

To enhance runners’ post-race experience, New York Road Runners collaborated with the city and arts organizations and has offered deals on some museum tickets and Broadway show tickets.
