The 2025 TCS New York City Marathon, held on Sunday, November 2, once again provided an unforgettable day for the more than 55,000 runners who crossed the city’s five boroughs: Staten Island, Brooklyn, Queens, the Bronx, and Manhattan. With cool temperatures and clear skies, this year’s edition was defined by one of the closest men’s finishes in the race’s recent history.
In the elite men’s race, Kenyan Benson Kipruto took the victory with an official time of 2:08:09, just a few hundredths of a second ahead of his compatriot Alexander Mutiso, who recorded the same time. The two engaged in a spectacular final duel in the last few meters of Central Park, with a sprint that kept the crowd on the edge of their seats until the finish line. Third place went to Albert Korir, also from Kenya, with a time of 2:08:57.
At the 40-kilometer mark, Kipruto and Mutiso were running together with a split of 1:58:58, foreshadowing a thrilling finish. In the final meters, Kipruto managed to maintain his narrow lead, securing his fourth Abbott World Marathon Majors title.
Although the time didn’t set a course record, the finish was one of the closest in recent memory in New York City. Benson Kipruto’s victory over Alexander Mutiso was officially by a mere 0.03 seconds, the closest in the history of the New York City Marathon. Both runners recorded times of 2:08:09. Remarkably, the margin of victory was exactly the same as in the men’s World Championship marathon held in Tokyo in September.
The previous closest victory was Paul Tergat’s over Hendrick Ramaala in 2005, when the difference was just one second.
