The TCS New York City Marathon 2025 attracts diverse runners from the New York City area and worldwide. One of the most common ways to participate is through a non-guaranteed entry lottery, which helps maintain the race’s diversity.
For example, in the 2023 marathon, 128,000 people registered for the lottery, but only about five percent secured a spot.
You can apply for the TCS New York City Marathon starting Wednesday, February 11, 2025, at 12:00 p.m. EST until March 25, 2025, at 11:59 p.m. EST. The official lottery date is yet to be announced but usually takes place in March.
You can submit your application at any time during this period.

1.- Non-Guaranteed Entry Runners Group
The available spots for non-guaranteed applicants will be assigned through three separate lotteries, one for each of the following applicant groups:
- “New York City Metropolitan Area” Applicants: Residents of New York City and those within a 60-mile radius.
- “National” Applicants: U.S. residents who live outside the New York City metropolitan area, including Puerto Rico and other U.S. territories.
- “International” Applicants: Non-U.S. residents.
A separate lottery will be conducted for each applicant group. To be selected, you must provide a valid credit card with a future expiration date and payment authorization. The card will be charged only if you are chosen. If the charge is declined, the applicant will be removed from the selection, and a new applicant from the same group will be drawn.
Applying for the non-guaranteed entry lottery allows NYRR to charge your credit or debit card a non-refundable entry fee if accepted into the TCS New York City Marathon 2025.
Note: If selected through the lottery, your registered credit card will be charged $255 (NYRR members) or $295 (non-members).
Your default card must be valid at the time of the lottery. After applications close, NYRR will test the card on file by charging a $1 hold.
Please note: A pending charge does not mean you have been selected. This step ensures that selected applicants can claim their spot without issues due to credit card payment failures.
You can withdraw your name from the applicant pool before the lottery, but once accepted—regardless of the entry method—fees are non-transferable and non-refundable. NYRR will not contact applicants before accepting them to reconfirm their selection.
Important:
Applicants using handcycles or racing wheelchairs must enter the non-guaranteed entry lottery.
NYRR rules prohibit registration for individuals being pushed in wheelchairs, strollers, or other equipment. Participants using wheelchairs or other approved mobility devices must be self-propelled throughout the race. While guides are allowed to accompany athletes with disabilities, they cannot push them along the course.
2.- Guaranteed Entry Runners Group
Guaranteed entry for the 2025 New York City Marathon is available for the following groups:
- Runners who have completed 15 or more New York City Marathons.
- Runners from the 2024 New York City Marathon who canceled their entry.
- Participants in the 9+1 Program and 9+$1K Program.
3.- Entry Through Authorized Travel Agents
Some international tour operators offer packages that include race entry if you live outside the United States. The participating official travel agents list is usually available on the marathon’s website. These packages often include flights, hotels, and race registration.

Second-Chance Lottery for NYRR Members
Current New York Road Runners (NYRR) members who meet the eligibility criteria and apply for the general non-guaranteed lottery will be automatically entered into an exclusive second-chance lottery for NYRR members.

Run for Charity: Team for Kids & Other Nonprofits
Another way to enter the marathon is through Team for Kids by New York Road Runners. This option requires runners to fundraise at least $2,620 for Team for Kids, which supports community youth running programs. Runners choosing this option receive marathon training and race-day benefits.
Instead of Team for Kids, you can also run for another nonprofit organization. The New York City Marathon partners with many charities that provide charity bibs to runners.
To participate, runners must raise a minimum amount—typically between $3,000 and $5,000, depending on the charity.
📌 The list of official charity partners for next year’s race has not been released yet.
