The TCS London Marathon has been announcing the athletes who will compete in the historic 45th edition of the London Marathon, scheduled for Sunday, April 27.
Hugh Brasher, CEO of London Marathon Events, describes the elite fields for the 2025 TCS London Marathon as the greatest in the event’s history:
“This is quite simply the most impressive elite field in the history of the London Marathon. We have all four Olympic and Paralympic marathon champions, as well as an Olympic triathlon champion in Alex Yee. We are welcoming back all defending champions and, excitingly, Ruth Chepngetich, who delivered one of the most outstanding athletic performances of all time by becoming the first woman to run under 2:10 in Chicago last year.”
An Out-of-This-World Women’s Lineup
The complete elite women’s lineup for the 2025 event will make this the first women’s marathon in history where three participants have times under 2:14. Alongside Ruth Chepngetich, the current world record holder (2:09:56), and Sifan Hassan, Olympic champion from Paris 2024 and 2024 World Athletics Athlete of the Year (2:13:44), Tigst Assefa (ETH) will also compete. Assefa is a two-time BMW Berlin Marathon champion and Olympic silver medallist, boasting the second-fastest time ever for women at 2:11:53.
New world record for Ruth Chepngetich at the 2024 Chicago Marathon
Additionally, defending champion Peres Jepchirchir (KEN) will participate.
British stars include Emile Cairess, the country’s new marathon sensation.
In what promises to be an unforgettable race, other notable participants include Joyciline Jepkosgei (KEN), the 2021 London Marathon champion, and Alemu Megertu (ETH), a two-time podium finisher at the London Marathon and winner of the 2024 Valencia Marathon. Jepkosgei and Megertu finished third and fourth in the 2024 TCS London Marathon, making it a record-breaking field of six women with sub-2:17 times.
- Ruth Chepngetich (Kenya) PB: 2:09:56
- Tigst Assefa (Ethiopia) PB: 2:11:53
- Sifan Hassan (Netherlands) PB: 2:13:44
- Peres Jepchirchir (Kenya) PB: 2:16:16
- Joyciline Jepkosgei (Kenya) PB: 2:16:24
“With Ruth, Sifan Hassan, and Tigst Assefa, we have the three fastest women of all time in a thrilling lineup. All three have run under 2:14, and no marathon in history has ever had a faster group. We are always proud when athletes say that winning the TCS London Marathon is harder than winning the Olympic or Paralympic marathon. The reason they say this is the quality of the participants we assemble here in London, and this year, our historic 45th edition, is stronger than ever before.”
Men’s Elite Field to Shine and Kipchoge returns
The men’s elite race will see Jacob Kiplimo (UGA) making his marathon debut, joining Olympic champion Tamirat Tola (ETH), Cairess, and Mutiso on the starting line for his first 42 km race. At 24 years old, Kiplimo is the reigning World Cross Country Champion and has won Olympic and World Championship medals in the 10,000 m on the track. He is also a double Commonwealth Games champion (5,000 m and 10,000 m) from Birmingham 2022 and the second-fastest man in half-marathon history (57:31).
In surprising news, the man widely regarded as the greatest marathoner in history, Kenyan Elliud Kipchoge, has confirmed his participation. Eliud Kipchoge, an 11-time world marathon champion, two-time Olympic gold medallist, and four-time London winner, will run the 2025 London Marathon. It will be Kipchoge’s first time competing in the event in five years; he last competed in 2020, finishing eighth.
Other notable participants include Sabastian Sawe (KEN), who posted the fifth-fastest time in history with 2:02:05 at the 2024 Valencia Marathon; reigning BMW Berlin Marathon champion Milkesa Mengesha (ETH); and Timothy Kiplagat (KEN), who finished second at the 2024 Tokyo Marathon with a time of 2:02:55.
