The 46th edition of the 2024 Chicago Marathon took place this Sunday, October 13, on a heartfelt day that paid tribute to the late Kelvin KIptum, who died in February 2024, with a pleasant and cool temperature of 15 degrees Celsius at the start but with wind gusts.
Incredibly, world champion Ruth Chepngetich, who won in Chicago in 2021 and 2022 and followed that up with a second place behind Sifan Hassan in 2023, achieved a new women’s world record of 02:09:56, becoming the first woman to go under 2:10 and achieving the triple.
The surprise male winner was Kenyan John Korir, who ran 2:02:43. This was his 11th marathon, and he improved his personal best of 2:05:01, also set in Chicago. Ethiopian Huseydin Mohamed Esa took second place in 02:04:39, and Amos Kipruto took third in 2:04:50.
The bar was set very high as last year, both road records were broken, and Kiptun achieved an incredible world record.
The current men’s course record is 2:00:35(2023 – Kelvin Kiptum )The previous women’s course record is 2:13:44(2023 – Sifan Hassan )
This makes the Chicago Marathon the route where seven important world records have been broken, thus competing with the Berlin Marathon as the route with the most world records.
“For over 45 years, the streets of Chicago have been home to world records, national records, and personal bests, and 2023 was no exception,” the organization said. It honored Kiptum’s achievement by celebrating the barriers he overcame with his 2:00:35.
Female Winners
The favorites were Ruth Chepngetich, Joyciline Jepkosgei, and Sutume Kebede.

Male Winners
Panamanian Jorge Castelblanco also participated.
How did the race develop?
Until the 21K mark, the men’s and women’s categories remained compact. The favorites were in the lead from the start.
However, as has been common in recent major marathons, from the half marathon onwards, the women separated, and the champion Ruth Chepngetich, in the lead, was looking for the triple.
The men remained compact until the 30th kilometer. For the women, champion Ruth Chepngetich continued with a lead of more than two minutes. This made her the undisputed leader, and she was on pace to break the world record and become the first woman to go under 2:10.
From kilometer 35, the Kenyan John Korir broke away from the men’s pack.
