Paula Radcliffe to Return to Marathon Running in 2025

Paula Radcliffe ended her professional running career on April 26, 2015, at the London Marathon. However, ten years later, she has decided to return to competition, participating in the Tokyo Marathon on March 2 and the Boston Marathon on April 21, 2025, with just over six weeks between these two Abbott World Marathon Majors events.

The British runner is considered one of the greatest marathoners in history. Radcliffe held the women’s world record for 16 years, with a time of 2:15:25 achieved at the 2003 London Marathon.

It wasn’t until the 2019 Chicago Marathon that Brigid Kosgei surpassed this mark, setting an impressive record of 2:14:04.

The announcement was made by 51-year-old Paula Radcliffe herself on her podcast, Paula’s Marathon Run Club.

Running the Tokyo and Boston Marathons: A Long-Standing Goal for Radcliffe

Competing in Tokyo and Boston will make Radcliffe a Six-Star Finisher of the Abbott World Marathon Majors, as she has already completed the original quartet with victories in London, Chicago, and New York, along with a third-place finish at the 2011 Berlin Marathon.

It’s worth noting that the Tokyo Marathon did not join the Marathon Majors series until 2013, making it harder for this event to be a goal during Radcliffe’s earlier career.

Additionally, since the London Marathon is scheduled close to Boston, she consistently prioritized the European capital throughout her career.

For Radcliffe, Boston holds special significance as the city where she won the Junior Cross Country Championships in 1992. However, this will be her first time running the iconic 42 km in Boston.

In an interview with Athletics Weekly, Radcliffe admitted that her biggest challenge will be recovery between the two races, for which she is taking all necessary precautions.

Will Radcliffe chase have any Records?

Although the current world master’s record for a W50 athlete is 2:31:05, set by Tatyana Pozdniakova (Ukraine) in 2005 in Los Angeles, this goal seems unlikely. Nevertheless, this extraordinary athlete might still surprise us.

A Family Affair at the 2025 London Marathon

As an additional note, Radcliffe’s 17-year-old daughter Isla will run the 2025 London Marathon, raising money for the charity that supported her and the Radcliffe family when Isla was diagnosed with cancer at the age of 13 in 2020.
