Check out the results of the men’s Olympic marathon held this Saturday, August 10.
The streets of Paris were filled with fans who could see the best men’s athletics in the Olympic marathon up close.
France gave a new Olympic champion: Ethiopia took the Olympic gold thanks to the excellent run made by Tamirat Tola, who won the gold with a time of 2:06: 26, thus achieving a new Olympic record.
Tola, 33 years old, with a best time of 2:03:39, finally reached the top of the podium despite the demanding route and the Parisian climate.
Belgian Bashir Abdi won the silver medal, Benson Kipruto took third place, and Great Britain took fourth place.
Tola was the number 4 of the Ethiopian team, replacing Sisay Lemma. World champion in 2002 and Olympic bronze medallist in Rio 2016, he completed the half marathon in 1:04:51. The breakaway came after the 30th kilometer, stopping the breakaway of Italian Eyob Faniel and other big favorites. Tola thus gave Ethiopia the gold medal that had eluded it in recent Olympic editions.
Paris was the scene of the first great duel between Eliud Kipchoge and Kenenisa Bekele in the 5,000m at the 2003 World Championships. However, we did not see that duel again today. The double Olympic champion and one of the big favorites, Eliud Kipchoge, began to show signs that something was not right when he put his hand on his left hip despite having led the first kilometers of the race. We do not know if these apparent problems were why he was so far away from the group, the demanding route, and the hot weather that finally took its toll on him. Kipchoge finally retired and did not finish the race.
Another favorite, the Ethiopian Kenenisa Bekele, also did not appear on the podium and finally arrived in 39th place in the race with a time of 2:12:24
Matthias Kyburz from Switzerland, the first Olympic athlete to train with artificial intelligence (AI), took 30th place with a time of 2:11:32.
The best from Spain was Ibrahim Chakir, with 2:11:44, while the Chilean Carlos Díaz was the most outstanding from Latin America, registering a 2:14:25 (53rd place).
82 runners showed up at the start at Paris City Hall. The person in charge of announcing the beginning of the race was the great Haile Gebrselassie. Here, we leave you the link with the final table of positions
