The Tokyo 21K Half Marathon race will be held this Sunday, October 20, 2024, on a 21.0975 km course that starts at the National Stadium of Japan, runs through areas such as Nihonbashi and Jinbocho, and finishes at the National Stadium of Japan.
The Tokyo Marathon Foundation held the first Tokyo Legacy Half Marathon in 2022, starting and finishing at the National Stadium of Japan, an iconic facility of the Tokyo Olympic and Paralympic Games.
In the men’s elite, current defending champion Evans Keitany and runner-up Benard Kimeli headline the list to run the race as invited athletes. In addition, the lineup includes athletes Bedan Karoki, who has a personal best of 58:42, Cleophas Kandie, Andrew Lorot, both clocking around 59 minutes, and Amos Kurgat.
The current Tokyo 21 K course record is 1:00:10.
It is also expected to see how 19-year-old Dennis Kipkurui performs at the half marathon distance, despite the fact that his personal best at 10,000 meters is currently only 28 minutes.
As for the Japanese athletes, Tomoki Ota, who represented Japan in the 10,000 meters at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, and Yusuke Nishiyama, who represented Japan in the marathon at the Oregon 2022 World Athletics Championships (both from Toyota Motor Corporation) will compete in the race as guest athletes.
Women’s category
In the women’s category, Loice Chemnung (Kenya), who has a personal best time of 1:05:58, is considered likely to lead the race.
Also on this list is Galbadrakh Khishigsaikhan, who represented Mongolia in the marathon at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games, starting from the finish line as one of the favorites. This promising athlete comes from winning the Standard Chartered Hong Kong Marathon held in January.
Among the Japanese athletes, Yuki Nakamura (Panasonic), who is coming off a win at the Gold Coast Marathon in July, is expected to keep pace with the foreign runners.
