A new edition of the London Marathon has arrived. This annual race is part of the Marathon Majors Series. It was first held in the British capital in 1981, when Chris Brasher, a former Olympic track and field champion inspired by the New York Marathon, founded it.

The route borders the iconic River Thames and is highlighted by the nature accompanying the runners. For the most part, the route is flat and fast, bringing the thousands of runners who manage to participate closer to the sights and attractions of the British capital.

It is a fast course on which numerous records have been broken. It is not a circular route but a linear one (the departure point differs from the arrival point).

Distance signaling

Each mile and 5K point will be marked on the route, and a clock will show the running time based on the actual start time (not elapsed time).

A dashed blue line on the asphalt indicates the shortest route and represents the distance measured accurately and correctly. Faster participants are advised to stay on this line.

Hydration points

The route has 12 hydration points with mineral water (every two miles), four isotonic drink stations, and two gels (miles 14 and 19).

You will also find portable toilets every 2 miles.

London Marathon course description

Below is a video with the route of the London Marathon 2024:

Start line

Starting in Blackheath, the race has three starting points depending on the color of the race bib, as well as the assigned start point to be reached via different subway stations:

  • Red exit in the south of Greenwich Park.
  • Green exit at St. John’s Park.
  • Blue exit at Shooter’s Hill Road.

Kilometer 5

Almost 5 kilometers into the route, the three routes converge in Woolwich. Here, the altimetry of the route also drops.

Kilometer 21

At the marathon’s halfway point, runners cross London’s famous Tower Bridge. In the last leg, London’s most touristy sites take center stage along the route.

We are beginning with a pass by the imposing Tower of London on Tower Hill.

Final kilometers – Finish line

In the final kilometers, runners are rewarded with a breathtaking view of the London Eye and other iconic sights such as Big Ben and Buckingham Palace. The finish line is on The Mall next to St. James’s Palace.

Very few changes have been made to the route since the start of the race. One of them occurred in 1982, when, due to some construction work, the finishing point was moved from Constitution Hill to Westminster Bridge, where it remained for 12 years.

In 1994, he moved back to The Mall in St. James, where he is finishing his career.

Eleven years later, in 2005, two modifications were made: a slight change along kilometer 35 to circumvent the cobblestone area of the Tower of London and a shift in counterclockwise along the so-called Isle of Dogs.
